Burning Man: Community & participation lead to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance

Burning Man is basically indescribable. Anything to anybody. Everything to many. Nothing to some.

Burning Man eludes most many demographic categories. It transcends divisions of age, income, and class, and it does not exhibit the normal boundaries of a subculture. It is essentially a populist phenomenon, egalitarian and easily accessible. It appeals to a common denominator in human nature and has spread at a grassroots level. From the burning of the effigy of a man as an art happening in San Francisco in 1986 thru the move to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert and some 5,000 participants in the 90s Burning Man has grown to a community of some 50,000 people.

The impact of the Burning Man experience has been so profound that a whole culture formed around it. This culture pushes the limits of Burning Man and has led to people banding together nation-wide, world-wide; putting on their own events, in attempt to rekindle that magic feeling that only being part of community can provide.

Tomas Loewy Bio

Tomas Loewy was born in Prague, grew up in Buenos Aires, Munich, New York. Moving to Miami equaled vision, optimism, creativity. Based on his international background in journalism, television, film & online, Tomas found his visual expression, molding images with a love for moments, situations, time lapse, detail and human emotions.
Part of this ‘just-like-being-there’ visual blend comes from the refusal to be content with the comfortable life most people lead. The right combination of stability and lack thereof is a personal choice: at different times draining, provoking, challenging, exhilarating.

His visual installations express emotions & impact others by showing facets of life with a like-being-there point of view the viewer would not encounter without seeing these images.
